Sorry this is a bit late this week but your newsletter has arrived and it is chock full of goodies and information. I am so excited about our Playing for Life Seminars this week with Aimee Sadler. I have seen a lot of you sign up and I hear the buzz in the halls. I am trying to picture what this is all gonna mean for our dogs, how happy they will be, how empowered we will feel to meet their needs! I am getting chills I am so excited. I will be around all week in and out of workshops feel free to say hi, I miss all your faces!!
We are closed on Monday 9/1/14 for Labor Day. We would appreciate if you would sign up to walk dogs that day . The available shifts are 8-10 am and 4-6pm. The doors will not be open during any other hours. Our staff needs to leave promptly at 10am and 6pm. You will find the sign up sheet on desk next to the log in monitor.
10Please take a minute to check out the volunteer central board. This is the quickest way to post that you will be missing a shift and that you would like someone to cover for you. This is available all the time. I get notified when someone posts to the board. Its easy, free, and convenient. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about its use.

I have been experiencing problems with receiving e-mails from people with yahoo e mail addresses. Some of them I get but most of them I do not. I have already come across a few people who thought I was ignoring them. I apologize if you have sent me an e mail and I have not responded. Please check all of your folders to see if you are getting a returned mail error. If this is the case and you have an alternate e mail you can use to communicate with me that would be great. I do not seem to have any problems with sending e mails to yahoo addresses but people cannot send or reply to me. This also applies to e mails addresses that use the yahoo server so it is not just limited to yahoo addresses. Sorry for the inconvenience there is no fix at this time we just have to work around it. I am sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Hey everyone, The first Saturday of the month is coming up again, which means the Salem Saturday Market! Please let me know if you would be interested in attending to talk about TNR, volunteering, fostering, the spay and neuter clinic, and our adoptable animals! We will have adoptable cats at this event, and possibly an adoptable dog. This event will be on 9/6. Setup is at 8am and it opens to the public at 9. Take down is at 2pm. We will have an AM shift and a PM shift, but you are welcome to stay for the whole event if you are up to it!
So, here’s what we need:

Someone to bring supplies, table, chairs, etc. (you will need a truck or SUV, etc. to fit the table) – _______________

Hey everyone! I have very exciting news! We will be participating in the Oregon Fair this year! We will be there on 8/28 from 10-5 J I need two shifts of people, the first shift will be 9-1 and the second shift will be 1-5. I have 8 fair passes – 4 for each shift, so if you attend you can enjoy the fair before or after your shift starts J Parking will cost $5 per vehicle. The fair is held at 2330 17th St NE, Salem, OR 97303.
AM Shift 9am-1pm:
-1 person to bring supplies (table, chairs, canopy, etc.) and stay for the event
-1 person to bring a dog (and stay for the event)
-1 person to bring cats (and stay for the event)
-1 person to man the booth
PM Shift 1pm-5pm:
-1 person to stay for the event and then bring the supplies back to WHS (table, chairs, canopy, etc.)
-1 person to bring a dog (and stay for the event)

The clinic has shifts available to help in the back with clean up, prepping for the next day, and closing duties.
Intake support is a brand new position open and it is gaining popularity. If you are looking for some really good hands on animal experience this is the spot for you.
Cleaning intake/customer service desk needs someone to come in once a week and clean up behind our intake desk. It is sweeping and dusting and organizing. This will make a more pleasant space for our intake staff who have one of the hardest jobs in the building.
We need more volunteers to help out with cleaning cat kennels. If your schedule changes and you have some time each week to come in one morning and help spruce up our kitty kennels we would be very appreciative.
Tuesday morning cat volunteer needed for handling while taking photos with Marilyn our new cat blogger/photographer.
From 9 am to 12 or so. This needs to be someone who already knows how to safely handle cats and has gone through our cat adoption ambassador training or cat hospitality training.
We need some people to stuff envelopes for Bowsers Boo Bash invitations. Either in the last week of August or first week of September . A group of 4 or 5 people would work wonderfully.
If there is anyone waiting to be a dog walker please let me know. I have open shifts now and I also have a wait list set up (thank you Jolene J. for pointing that out to me)
This upcoming week we have our wonderful Playing for Life Seminars. During this time we will be sending staff out for continued education but that is putting a huge strain on our already short staffed teams to meet the day to day shelters needs. During this time I ask and encourage anyone who has any training to help with cleaning to come in and support us. We will also need help showing dogs and help with showing cat, this would be very helpful to alleviate the stress on the poor staff. We are in the interview process right now and have even hired great candidates to fill in these spots but before they are brought in we want to get through these couple weeks in one piece and you guys can help us do that. Below are the tasks that we need help with. The cleaning shifts will be morning shifts but the adoption ambassador help will be during open hours. Help me to help my team get out of this month without exceeding their stress levels, and without feeling panicked and overwhelmed. You guys may help out the animals directly but by doing so you are giving the staff some much needed piece of mind.

The Tabors for cleaning dog iso on 8/19/14. Taking on a task outside of your training and learning something new to step in and make someone else’s day a little easier and brighter is a big deal. You guys are a shining example of teamwork!

She will ice-pack neuter sites for me(us), give dogs baths and any special project I have for her.
Geri Ball also has been awesome, she usually will help me find someone who can bathe a dog if needed. She will also hang signs for me, fit harnesses and she definitely lets me know when someone isn’t quite right with a dog.

Aimee Sadler week is soon upon us !!! Do not forget if you have signed up for any of the Playing for Life workshops you need to attend the lecture at 5:30pm on Monday August the 25th at the Red Lion. I am so looking forward to this event. I am going to get my foot in each one of the presentations so I can soak up the knowledge. I hope to see you guys around! Its going to be so much fun!
September 29th is yet another 5th Monday Party!!! I love these. What a great way for us to get to hang out. Its potluck style bring food. Hang out with me and some of your other fellow pet loving volunteer peers. Visit with the staff as they rush in to stuff their faces. Then meet us all out at Santiam Brewery for the Bark and Brew that benefits WHS!
There is another Yappy Hour coming up on September 12th. We are looking to spice things up a bit this time around. Come on out and see what’s new!! If you loved Jimmi Rigged Catering last time ( I know I did) then you should come out again . I know my dogs had a blast so if nothing else I am going for them but the beer is a bonus. So save the date and the time will be 5pm. We will be getting together by the playgroup turn outs.
BOWSERS BOO BASH!!!!! Saturday October 25th. 5-9 pm at the Salem conference center. Save the date!! Invites are going out in the next couple of weeks keep your eyes peeled.
What is a Kong Cat Toy good for?
- The Kong Cat Toy is wonderful for promoting exercise and helping your cat lose weight!
- It can be used for providing mental stimulation (cats can go stir crazy, too!). What is mental stimulation? Cats need daily “mental exercise”. All that means is that cats need to see something new every day or do something that challenges their brains in order to obtain optimal mental health and to prevent boredom and unwanted behavior.
- It is true that some textures of certain toys are irresistible to certain cats and they become occupied for hours on end, leaving you to watch your favorite show, cook your favorite meal, or to simply sit back and enjoy the silly cat’s play-time!
- Some Kong Cat Toys contain catnip, which is an irresistible herb that causes some cats to either go wild and crazy or to mellow way out – feel free to test out catnip on your personal cat and see how it affects them. You might be surprised!

Attention All Animal Handling Volunteers- I know you hear this all the time, please make sure you are taking the few extra minutes or seconds to read the signs and notes that we use to communicate. Not only the staff but other volunteers use these to communicate a need the animal has or ways to proceed. This is the only way we can help keep you and our animals safe and out of trouble. This applies to the green signs that are applied to the kennels that say do not open our kennels we just came back from surgery. These animals have only been awake from anesthesia for a short time and they are not all together there. They feel weird and disoriented and this can make them act out in not so pleasant or safe ways. They need that time to relax. Think of yourself after surgery, groggy and disoriented you don’t want everyone coming in and hugging on you and talking loud and messing with your face etc. The animals are the same but they don’t have the ability to ask you nicely to leave them alone so lets make sure we are respecting their space and condition. Even if they seem playful and happy they may still be a little off and we don’t know what will or wont push them over the edge or frighten them. Thank you in advance for reading the signs from now on!
Here at WHS we have several core values. These values serve to create a positive culture for both the staff and the volunteers alike. I want to touch on my favorite one “Positive Service To All’. What does that really mean? Well it means that every person and animal you come in contact with deserves to be treated with kindness, respect, and caring. This includes each other. We are all on the same team. I trust you guys to self-regulate to some extent. There is only one of me and 850 or so of you at any given time. I only see what a handful of you guys are up to. You guys catch each other when you use too much litter, or when you don’t use the right exit for a specific dog, or when you aren’t wearing clothes appropriate for your shift and assignment. When you take the time to let another volunteer know of their mistake or misunderstanding please be kind and considerate . We aren’t looking to get anyone in trouble, we aren’t looking to single any one out or make them feel bad. What we are trying to do is to educate each other on the safest way to do things so we can all enjoy what we do here and keep helping out the way we want to. So consider your tone and your body language and the words you choose and pick the kindest way possible. Positivity is contagious … one of the only things we encourage be spread around vigorously here!!
The shelter will be closing at 4pm on Monday, August the 25th in order for all of our staff and volunteers to make it to the lecture at the Red Lion for the Aimee Sadler workshops. There is no walk shift or cat adoption Ambassador shifts that evening. If you would like to make up those hours in the following days we would love the extra help please contact me with what times work for you!

WHS accepts requests from people searching for an outdoor only or barn cat? We do have restrictions on types of cats that qualify as outdoor only, as well as the type of outdoor only environment they will be going to. The benefits of getting an outdoor cat from us is that the cat will be altered, and tested for felv/fiv first, you would be saving a cat who may not be an ideal adoption candidate, and you If you know someone who wants to give a healthy outdoor cat a great home please have them contact customer service to be added to our waiting list. 503-585-5900 ext. 300
