The Willamette Humane Society (WHS) located in Salem, Oregon is looking for a qualified, self-motivated, energetic, organized, and outgoing individual with compassion for animals.
We’re a team of 60+ staff and over 700 volunteers working jointly to achieve our mission: establishing, maintaining, and enhancing the bond between companion animals and people of Marion and Polk counties.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Custodial & Facilities Specialist (CFS) actively improves and maintains the appearance of the shelter inside and out. The CFS ensures timely and efficient upkeep of the building and its grounds. The CFS must demonstrate, mentor, and reinforce WHS values, principles and mission-driven culture.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform job duties in a positive, helpful manner.
- Schedule duties so they are completed in a timely manner.
- Perform custodial duties according to the daily, weekly and monthly schedule outlined in the Facilities Manual. These custodial duties include but are not limited to emptying trash receptacles, vacuuming, mopping and buffing floors, dusting, cleaning restrooms and keeping the staff break room clean.
- Assist the shelter staff in the closing cleaning duties each evening, involving sweeping, mopping and trash removal.
- Perform routine scheduled maintenance projects on the HVAC units, washer and dryer, and emergency lighting system.
- Under the direction of the Facilities Coordinator, work on specific maintenance projects which could include painting, the use of power tools, the use of ladders, and lifting.
- Assist with landscape projects including using the riding mower, weed whacking, power washing, and trimming bushes or trees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
CONTROLS OVER WORK
The CFS works under the general direction of the Facilities Coordinator. The CFS is expected to pursue the established duties with minimal supervision. Confidentiality and professionalism must be strictly adhered to at all times.
CONTACTS WITH OTHERS
The CFS will have ongoing contact with volunteers, vendors and partners. All contact will require tactful exchanges and a positive, professional demeanor to ensure the shelter’s positive image and integrity throughout the community.
The CFS will work both indoors and outdoors. Comfortable temperatures are kept within the building, but work outside may involve exposure to winter weather and summer heat. Will be required to operate shelter vehicles and other equipment. Will be expected to work around animals, employing basic safety skills. Will have access to protective equipment such as boots, gloves, protective eye and ear wear, etc. The typical schedule will involve working alone in the facility for several hours each shift in the late night hours.
This position is physically demanding. The CFS will be required to stay standing or active during the entire shift. The work performed both in and out of the shelter requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and other strenuous activities. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Worker may be required to take a physical examination paid for by WHS prior to the start of work activities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS. AND ABILITIES
- Must be able to speak, read, and write in English so written and verbal instructions can be followed, and so invoices and other vendor/contractor communications can be completed successfully.
- Must have knowledge of OSHA work safety standards.
- Must understand and be able to support board policies and position statements regarding animal welfare subjects.
- Must be able to work cooperatively with people and communicate clearly about various situations relating to the care and treatment of animals and animal areas.
- Must work in a manner that reflects a safe environment for animals, the public and other employees.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Previous experience is required. At least two years of custodial/maintenance work is crucial to success on the job.
Additional requirements: Must have a demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for animal welfare and WHS Mission; be willing to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required by the job; have a valid Oregon driver’s license; and meet the physical requirements of the job.
Salary: Position begins at $11.80 per hour. There is no relocation benefit for this position.
Schedule: Typically 6:00 pm to 2:30 am, Friday through Tuesday.
Benefits: Medical, dental and life insurance available after 60 days; paid time off provided after 90 days. A 401(k) retirement plan is available after one year of service.
