Please note! The shelter is closed today and adoptions will only be taking place at Capitol Subaru from 12-6 p.m. Thanks!
Ready to meet your four-legged best friend this weekend? Willamette Humane Society is excited to host our “Subaru Loves Pets” waived-fee adoption event in collaboration with the ASPCA and Subaru. Join us on Sunday, October 1 from 12-6 p.m. at Capitol Subaru—located at 3235 Cherry Ave NE in Salem, Ore. We’re excited to offer:
- Waived-fee cat and dog adoptions
- Food trucks and refreshments
- Subaru test drives
- And more!
You will also have an opportunity to “paw it forward” for animals in need! Bring a bag of recyclables (cans, bottles, etc.) or make a cash donation to cover the cost of food for a future shelter animal during his or her stay at Willamette Humane Society.
During the one-day event, adoption fees on select cats and dogs of all ages will be waived. This is an off-site adoption event hosted at Capitol Subaru, which means not all pets currently listed on our website will be in attendance and eligible for this specific adoption special. We hope to adopt up to 50 pets during the event.
Thank you to our generous community partners, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), as well as adults in custody at Oregon State Correctional Institution (OSCI) and dog handlers of the OSCI Dogpaw Second Chance program, for making this possible. This event is part of Subaru of America, Inc.’s national “Subaru Loves Pets” campaign and supported by the ASPCA.
Our “Subaru Loves Pets” adoption event is all about connecting animals in need with adoptive families, as well as raise awareness of pet adoption in the local Salem-Keizer community. Come meet your fuzzy family member this weekend!
Please note that this special adoption event will be hosted at Capitol Subaru (3235 Cherry Ave NE in Salem). Willamette Humane Society will be closed on Sunday, October 1, and no shelter services will be available at our Turner Road location. Thank you!
Where and when is this event happening?
The “Subaru Loves Pets” no-fee adoption event happens on Sunday, October 1, 2017, from 12-6 p.m. at Capitol Subaru—located at 3235 Cherry Ave NE in Salem, Ore. Willamette Humane Society will be closed all day on Sunday, October 1. We will not be facilitating any adoptions or other services at our Turner Road location that day.
What does the adoption process look like?
It largely remains the same. Adopters are still required to go through our standard adoption application and screening. However, we are not requiring dog-to-dog meets during this adoption event. Adopters will be counseled on this during the adoption process and we’ll provide educational material on introducing a new pet into the home. Our Behavior and Training team is also available via email and phone to support adopters post-adoption as well.
How do you make sure pets go to good homes during waived fee adoption events?
Adopting families will be required to complete Willamette Humane Society’s standard adoption application at the event. Our adoption requirements do not change. We encourage the entire family to come along to meet the prospective adoptive pet. We’ll have additional staff and volunteers at the event all day Sunday to answer questions, facilitate meet-and-greets, and guide new pet parents through the adoption process.
What are your hours this weekend?
The shelter is open noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, September 30, but closed Sunday, October 1. We have limited intake on that Friday, September 29, and no intake on Saturday, September 30, to help ready our staff and pets for adoption. All adoptions on Sunday, Oct. 1, will be done between noon and 6 at Capitol Subaru, located at 3235 Cherry Ave NE, Salem, OR 97301.
Will shelter services be impacted this weekend?
The shelter will be closed on Sunday, October 1, which will halt all our usual shelter services for that day. In addition, we will not be scheduling surrender appointments on Saturday, September 30, unless it is an emergency. Please give our Customer Service Team a call at 503-585-5900 ext. 300 if you have any immediate concerns!
Can I put a hold on an animal?
We will not be accepting holds on animals prior to the event. In addition, we can no longer accept holds placed over the phone. No holds will be accepted on Saturday unless it is a pre-alter hold, meaning the animal has not been spayed or neutered. The shelter will be open and facilitating adoptions as usual on Thursday and Friday.
If we fill out the adoption form in advance, will that help speed the process?
Not at this event. Adopters will be required to complete a paper application onsite, whether we already have an online application on file or not.
