Estate and Planned Giving

Remembering Willamette Humane Society in your estate plans is a powerful way to invest in tomorrow’s homeless animals. Today’s ability to keep shelter standards and adoption rates high is possible because of the estate gift designations made by supporters decades ago.

Joining our Legacy Society is easy and completely revocable.

  • Find helpful information on making a gift in your will, known as a bequest.
  • Name WHS as a beneficiary in your life insurance or retirement account.
  • Secure the future for your pets through our Guardian Angel Program, designed for peace of mind if you should precede them in death.

Inez FarmerWillamette Humane was in Inez’s estate plans and received a bequest gift in September 2013. Inez reached her 101st birthday still caring for cats in and around her farmhouse in Scotts Mills. Her special housecat went to live with her sister upon her death. Inez supported Willamette Humane Society for almost two decades. Her estate gift will help WHS provide for an anticipated intake of 4-5,000 cats this coming year.[/box]

Ways to Give

[toggle title=”Bequest” open=”false”]
We hope you’ll consider including a gift to Willamette Humane Society in your will or living trust. Called a charitable bequest, this type of gift offers these main benefits:

  • It’s simple. We’ve even got sample language you can share with your estate planning attorney.
  • It’s versatile. You can structure the bequest to leave a specific item or amount of money, make the gift contingent on certain events, or leave a percentage of your estate to WHS.
  •  There’s tax relief. If your estate is subject to estate tax ($1 million in Oregon, $5.45 million under federal tax code), your gift is entitled to an estate tax charitable deduction for the gift’s full value.

Estate gift donors are automatically members of our Legacy Society. If you’d like to join our Society today, please complete our revocable Letter of Intent. You may choose to remain anonymous or help us promote awareness by choosing to receive public recognition.

The gift of a funded life insurance policy or retirement account may enable you to turn a moderate monthly premium into a substantial gift to WHS. By simply naming WHS as the beneficiary of your paid life insurance policy, 401(k), IRA, TSA or other retirement account, you can make a substantial future gift to benefit homeless animals.
Just contact the company that holds these policies or accounts, ask for a beneficiary form, and update it to reflect WHS as the primary or contingent beneficiary. You may leave all or part of these policies or accounts to WHS. Note that, as a direct distribution at your passing, funds from retirement accounts will not be subject to estate tax or to income tax, making the entire balance benefit WHS.

What would happen if you died and your pets were left with no one to care for them? Many animal lovers have assurances from family or loved ones that their companion animals will be cared for in a loving manner if that should happen. If that is not the case for you, Willamette Humane Society has a Guardian Angel Program that will provide you with the secure knowledge that your pets will be cared for if they should outlive you.
You are invited to enroll your companion animals in the Guardian Angel Program by including WHS in your estate or by making a gift at a specified level or higher. You will be asked to provide registration information about your animals and their living environment and keep the information updated annually. Should it be necessary, the humane society will take custody of your pet after your passing and be sure your companions are placed in a similar setting to their current environment.
This is not an insurance program or a pet trust. It is a way for you to make a significant gift to WHS and provide for your pets. Most members of the Guardian Angel program are already members of the Legacy Society, having made a planned gift to Willamette Humane. Please contact us for more information and a personal consultation about your pet(s).
