Hey community, it’s Rachel Backer, Shelter Manager of WHS, and for those of you who have met me, you may know that one of my favorite things about working here, is seeing how people rally together to really give back to our animals. I love to meet those who bring in donations, sponsor kennels, and volunteer their time and resources. Even if it is simply a can of cat food or a dog toy, I LOVE seeing this village work together for our mission. Here’s a great example of such kindness.
In October 2015, I received a call from a wonderful gal named Judy from Bernina Stretch and Sew in Keizer.
Ms. Judy was calling to ask about the measurements in our kennels, for dogs and cats.
They decided to have some sewing stations available for community members to come and sew kennel quilts.
They laid out batting and fabric already cut to size and ready to sew and encouraged anyone to come use one of their machines or take the pattern and supplies home and bring them back, already completed.
Fast forward to today, January 2nd, 2016. I went down to Bernina to pick up the first load of kennel quilts and was BLOWN AWAY!
There were over 100 already completed, in different sizes to accommodate dog kennels, cat kennels and kitten kennels.
Bernina had purchased 50 yards of batting and 50 yards of various fabrics for the community to use to make these quilts for our cats and dogs, and the community responded, with some fabric and batting donations of their own! How generous! They have even offered to keep the promotion running through the end of March, so we could have more kennel quilts made for our animals. We are SO grateful for the gals at Bernina and all of their customers. Their generosity has even spurred phone calls from members of the public who want to make some at home on their machines without using Bernina resources. This act of kindness will keep our animals warm and cozy this winter.
If you would like to contribute, head on down to Bernina Stretch and Sew on River Rd in Keizer. They have all of our kennel measurements and some supplies available for you to help make a lovely quilt!
Thanks so much Bernina!
(They even have a special edition “Best Friends” machine, with the sweetest paw prints on it available for purchase, and every one sold will generate a donation for Petfinder!)
Rachel enjoys connecting with customers, hearing their stories and happy tails, getting to know the members of our community, both 4 legged and otherwise, and posting to Willamette Humane Society's social media pages, sharing stories of the good stuff happening here.
When she isn't at work, Rachel spends her time covered in cat fur with her 4 (almost 5) kids, 3 cats, 1 dog, darling husband and a partridge in a pear tree.
