Volunteer News for Nov. 18th-24th, 2013

Volunteers Rock!

It’s Volunteer of the Quarter time again! Do you know an exceptional volunteer who should be recognized for their outstanding service and dedication to our mission? Someone who goes above and beyond, maybe behind the scenes, maybe at the Thriftstore? Someone who really makes a difference in the lives of the people and animals we serve?

Send me an e-mail, or fill out a form (in the volunteer room) and turn it in to me by the end of next week, November 29th.

More Appreciation:

I received this wonderful e-mail from Randy Mills, our Volunteer of the Year, who recognized some exceptional service by the Saturday Cat Adoption Ambassadors Sally Turner and Lucy and Emma Salmony:

On Saturday, I arrived at the shelter around 3:00 after a funeral. As I was working the dog adoption floor I noticed a volunteer helping a person interested in looking at a cat.  The service was superb, loving and thoughtful.  The shift was manned by Sally, Lucy and Emma (with a broken arm).

We have gone several Saturdays without support, but these three angels were amazing.  Please a gold star for each person.

News and Announcements:

Holiday Tree Contest at the Salem Center Mall! Check it out, our tree is the best! Vote early and vote often, that is actually how it works!

If you have a phone you use to send text messages, you can help us win up to $2,000 dollars for the animals in our shelter! If you don’t have such a phone, most of your friends and/or coworkers probably do, so you can ask them to vote for us! Just think about the exponential networking potential…mind boggling!

Here’s how to do it: Vote every day, once a day!

To vote for our tree, text “GIVE4” to 444222.

Helpful hints if you have never used the text feature on your cell phone before:

The 444222 is like a phone number, you put that in the “to” spot on your cell phone message. The “GIVE4” is the message you are sending. Type that in the message box on your phone. Hit send, and you just voted. Repeat every day until Dec.15th!

The system will accept one vote per cell number per day between November 23rd (tomorrow) and December 15th.  Remember – “Standard messaging rates apply”, which really means there is no charge unless you have a very limited cell phone plan, or one that doesn’t include any texting at all.

Who wants an excuse to go downtown, do some window shopping, get a free Mocha or Latte and help us out a bit?

We have some posters for the Popovich show coming up, and we would like to get them distributed downtown like we did with the Bowser’s Posters. Everyone who purchases a ticket to see this wonderful show and uses the code “Woof” when they order will earn WHS a $2.00 donation. That could really add up!

If you can help, pick up the posters in the volunteer room, maybe check out a dog to take with you (hint, hint) and be sure to stop by the customer service desk in the lobby to get you coupon for a FREE 16 oz Mocha or Latte from Twinsies Cupcakes while you are downtown. They are located near the Elsinore Theatre.

Davenport’s Den has some GREAT new stuff, just in time for holiday shopping, so be sure and check it out during our regular business hours. Oooh, I just saw them unpacking some really cool looking new food puzzles and toys for dogs and cats. I know what Zoe gets in her stocking! Also, the rest of this month, all clothing is on sale, an additional 10% off your regular discount.

Thriftstore News:

The Thriftstore is participating in the downtown Salem Golden Ticket promotion. Purchase $35 worth of items at the thrift store (in one transaction) and receive a Golden Ticket certificate that you can take to other participating downtown businesses and receive a discount that they determine. Likewise, if you spend a designated amount at one of those businesses, you will get a certificate which you could use here for our discount, which at this time is 10% off your total purchase, but your volunteer discount is bigger, so shop the Thriftstore first, and get your Golden Ticket to take to the other downtown retailers!

As a volunteer, you receive 25% off your purchase of regular priced items every day! You never know what kind of amazing thing you may find for that unique person on your gift list this year. Volunteering, shopping and donating at the thrift store are great ways to support WHS.

Exciting news from Nature’s Pet Market:

The 2014 Pets of Salem Calendar is now available at the Willamette Humane Society and at Nature’s Pet Market 4555 Liberty Rd S, in the SunnySlope Shopping Center! Only $19.99 and 100% of the proceeds go to support the Willamette Humane Society!! The calendar is filled with photos of local Salem pets, cats, dogs and guinea pig, and special monthly money saving promotions.

We are very excited!!  This year the calendar has been sponsored by many food and treat vendors allowing Nature’s Pet Market to donate 100% of the proceeds to the Willamette Humane Society. The goal is to sell 200 calendars! If all 200 calendars sell, we get a $4000 donation to help the shelter and the animals that pass through our care. Nothing would make us happier!

Adoptable spotlight:

Great week for long time canine residents to get adopted! Let’s do our best to help the cats out this week before Thanksgiving. The adult cats are all adoption fee waived until further notice, and I am guessing that promotion will go at least through this weekend.

There are some really wonderful cats, and almost every cat in B-room likes greenies cat treats a lot, so grab a bag of treats and get to know your new best friend, or your mother-in-law’s, your delivery guy’s, your hairdresser’s, your neighbor’s, or your kid’s best friend’s new best friend!

I will be out of the office next week Thursday through Sunday, so if I don’t see you before then, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
